DECEMBER/JANUARY

When the wind eases a bit the fishing has been pretty good.
The usual suspect are about with good numbers of Cod, plenty of LSD's some Whiting and a few Rays as well.
Rumour has it that there are more Cod doubles about but few photo's to back it up.
The huge exception to that is the 32lb specimen on this catch reports page, with a great photo!
Late January seems to be bringing out the larger Cod.
The weather is a bit more settled as I write this so give it a go, there could be a monster out there with your name on it!

Let us know what your catching mail to: catch reports  or use the online form here

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER

There are good numbers of Cod already showing along the upper reaches of the Bristol Channel. Anywhere from Brean and Kingston Seymour up to Severn Beach and Aust.
The building tides seem to be more productive. Some Sole and Flounders as well as a few Codling along the mid channel marks, but not in the same numbers as the top end.
Further west the shore and boats are producing good numbers of Bass, Pollock and some codling.

AUGUST /SEPTEMBER 2011

There are good quality fish to be had if you fish the western end of the Channel. Some notable catches of Black Bream and Turbot to name just two have come to notice recently (25/08)
Bass catches are good from both boat and shore marks, as are the numbers of Pollock showing.
If you fancy it now's the time to have a go at the Mullet which abound along the shoreline, all within easy casting distance, but easily spooked.
The Triggers should be putting in some kind of appearance soon.

APRIL / MAY 2011

Slowly but surely the fishing improves! As the Codling numbers decline, the spring species appear. Rays aplenty on the usual marks around Dunster, Blue Anchor and up the channel. The Smoothounds have made a very welcome early appearance with cracking reports of manic sessions both afloat and from the shore. Minehead Harbour wall has been a hotspot for those shorebased. Smoothounds are usual associated with crab baits, but this season the top bait appears to be a strip of squid. It would be remiss not to mention the annual Lesser Spotted Dogfish invasion! This year has been no different. From what we hear, there is a ratio of about 10 or so  LSD's, to 1 of any other fish species. At least they keep the rod tips in action in my view, even if they do seem to prefer the most expensive bait option on offer! As for something different, Rob Darby captured an incredibly early, and very nice 3lb Black Bream on Porlock Weir charter boat Lyn-Marie 2, on 16th April. This was one of a number that day, and the good news is that they are still featuring in catches now. The Pollack and Congers are waking up from their winter slumber, with some nice examples of the former being caught from Foreland Point westwards.

In other good news.......... the Mackerel have arrived! These fish are very important to the food chain, and usually herald the arrival of many predatory species, most notably Tope. We have heard of some early sport to the boat anglers, but the best is to come through June and July.

Been fishing? Send us your catch reports after your trip and we'll put them in the Individual Catch Reports section. Anything worthy of note will get a line or two in this section as well. If you have any pictures of you and your catch, we'll publish those too!

FEBRUARY / MARCH 2011

These months are usually the low point of the year. The water is cold, the weather is usually rotten, and the last 10 years have seen cod fishing decline to almost non-existent. NOT THIS YEAR!! The really good news is that the Codling are still coming to the anglers in very good numbers. The run of 2 to 5 pounders is still making many happy anglers. The fantastic weather over the last month have brought out many of the more fair weather types (we all have tendencies for that!), and the reports have been all positive. Codling are being captured by the boat and shore anglers in good numbers, & there is the (very), occasional 10lb plus. All the usual baits seem to be working... no outstandingly noted preference. A Minehead Harbour wall angler had a wonderful 10lb 6oz Bass to take home for dinner on the last set of big tides - jammy sod! Rays, mainly Thornback and the odd Small-Eyed, have been bulking up the catch rate. The Lesser Spotted Dogfish are waking up from their winter nap and are filling the gaps between cod bites on most of the shore marks from Hinkley Point westwards. An angler from Stroud managed a fine 11lb Bull Huss from the shore at Porlock Weir, from the edge of the kelp beds on the Gore - a good fish for this time of year.

Even though the fishing has been really good, there is much more to come as we approach Spring and the Summer. I find this is a good time of the year to give all your gear a check over & service. Replace that mainline which has suffered the effect of UV and lost all its strength. Rinse over the reels, scrub off the accumulated salt crystals, lubricate with your preferred high performance, waterproof oils & greases. Check the rings of your rods, running a fine needle around the eye can detect cracked ceramic eye linings. A crack will shred your line - not good when you've hooked and playing a monster - the difference between one in the boat/landed, or not.

Been fishing? Send us your catch reports after your trip and we'll put them in the Individual Catch Reports section. Anything worthy of note will get a line or two in this section as well. If you have any pictures of you and your catch, we'll publish those too!

JANUARY 2011

The good news has kept on coming! Codling continue to entertain anglers from the shore & the boats at a rate not seen for ten or eleven years. This season has been fantastic. Even the sprats haven't really interfered like they can sometimes. It is clear that the Cod are still consuming this abundant food from what they spit out when landed, or upon cleaning for the table. All this is good news. If the sprats are here then the cod will follow - we will need to worry if these food species lower down the food chain dwindle. Cod are a really efficient hoovering feeding machine.  They scavenge for food constantly, that is why in their early years they grow so quickly - doubling their weight at least, each year. I find it always worthwhile to take a look at the stomach contents of the fish when cleaning up for the table. It does give you an idea of what is going on down there in the depths. The hoovering comment I made earlier is regularly borne out by the amount of stones, and other non-food items you can find in the tummy of a Cod. A few years ago I was fishing with a work colleague at Lilstock beach. He pulled in a 3.5 pounder with a strange looking lump in its belly - when gutted this lump was found to be a bright red jumbo lego brick!!!! Strange, but true! Although Cod are the mainstay of fishing at this time of year, I must mention some early Ray sport. The catches we have been told about are really by-catch as the anglers were targeting Cod. A nice 17lb Blonde Ray was captured off Selworthy Sands, with several smaller ones, as well as Thornbacks, and Small Eyed's. One trip with Steve Webber saw over 40 Cod caught and twenty rays.. with a smattering of other bits and pieces. Nothing to complain about this year, although we can always find something to moan about - usually the weather! Not a bad start to the year at all. Lets' hope that it continues - no reason why not.

We were thinking of adding some Boat and Venue reviews from you the readers. If you have anything to say about a Boat, Skipper or venue etc, we would love to have your contribution. Please use the Feedback link to tell us what you think (your comments will be monitored for suitability). We look forward to hearing from you.

DECEMBER 2010

The Codling are still providing some very good catches. They all still seem to be in the 1.5lb to 3.5lb bracket, although there are reports of some fine fish into double figures from the shore, as well as the boats. It hasn't been this good for a decade. The Sprats and Herring have arrived, but that doesn't seem to have had too much of an effect on the Cod catch rate, unusually. It has been cold, snowy, wet, windy... you name it we've had it this month! The hardy ones amongst us have been venturing out and having some good successes. It is just as well for those who have ventured out the half a mile or more to the Hinkley Point reef. Day or night, on the right tides, there have been numerous anglers out there  trying their luck. The occasional good Whiting, and the old stalwart... the Conger Eel, also feature in the catches at this venue. Bossington Beach near Porlock has been busy with the Cod anglers too. This isn't your typical Cod venue for the Bristol Channel - no mud & sand, just broken ground and pebbles. It seems the cod angling here has been as good as any of the usual marks up the channel, great news. The boats from Minehead, when they've got out, have had good sport with 'Rodney', providing the anglers with some substantial fish suppers. Up the channel at Burnham, Weston, Clevedon, Portishead, Severn Beach etc.... Codling aplenty! Some good Flounder have been reported especially around Sand Bay and Aust.

Send us your catch reports after your trip and we'll put them in the Individual Catch Reports section. Anything worthy of note will get a line or two in this section as well. If you have any pictures of you and your catch, we'll publish those as well!

NOVEMBER 2010

CODLING, CODLING, CODLING.......................... Now's the time!

This week's (21/11/10) hotspot has to be Dunster on the bigger tides, with unwashed squid as the top bait.

The Codling are producing some really good results for anglers. For the first time in years  there has been a sense of anticipation amongst the anglers I have met at the venues. It is like the old days! The likelihood of catching one or two of these favoured fish in a session is nearly a dead cert. We haven't witnessed that in years.  From the shore there are loads of fish in the 1.5lb to 3.5lb bracket, with the odd better fish to around 6lb. We haven't heard of any really good fish, but if you know of one then let us know about it here at BCA. The boats are also getting in on the act. Minehead boats are having a good time on the muddy bottom marks Eastwards toward Watchet. The Warren Point, Dunster Beach, Blue Anchor Bay marks are all good places to be for the Cod action. The usual baits are accounting for the fish, mainly worm and squid, but mackerel and peeler crab are also being eagerly taken apparently. The venues up channel are equally doing well with boats at Burnham-on-sea, WSM and Portishead all reporting a really good start to the winter Cod season. All we've done is talk about Cod so far... but there are still plenty of other species out there to target. Rays of all varieties are still featuring, Flounder are beginning to reach their prime time of the year, Bass are still coming to the hardy lure spinners at Bossington and Porlock Weir. Conger Eel are also eagerly taking baits on offer before the water temperature drops. Silver Eel can be taken  to a short cast along most of the upper channel marks, frequently being match winners. (Don't forget you need a freshwater licence to catch these upstream of Avonmouth).

Things bode well for the rest of the winter season, so drop us your catch reports after your trip and we'll put them in the Individual Catch Reports section. Anything worthy of note will get a line or two in this section as well. If you have any pictures of you and your catch, we'll publish those as well!

OCTOBER 2010

THE CODLING HAVE ARRIVED FOR SHORE AND BOAT ANGLERS! I would venture to say that the current run of Cod is the best we've seen in the Bristol Channel for about 10 years. So far the reports are of large numbers of 1.5 to 3.5 pounders. The ones that I have seen have been in prime condition. As for bait... who knows! I've been on boats where only those anglers with worm have captured them, but on other occasions it seems squid is the bait of the day. If the start of the winter season is anything to go by, we really are in for a good'un. As for where to catch them... they are being taken at all the usual marks and boat venues. The boats are catching them from Foreland Point all the way through to Portishead. The shore anglers are having fun from Bossington to Severn Beach and beyond. Minehead Town beach is the place for Sole, but it seems the bigger tides favour the catch rate. There are still reports of Bull Huss , huge numbers of small Tope, and the occasional good Smoothound to the boat anglers out of Minehead and to the West. The various Rays make up for boat catches in the absence of anything else. What seems to missing at the moment are the Whiting. This species usually arrives before the Cod, but this year that is not the case. Yes one or two real little'uns have taken the baits, but the nice keepers have been absent. Fingers crossed that it only gets better!

We really do love to hear how you get on, so drop us your catch reports after your trip and we'll put them in the Individual Catch Reports section. Anything worthy of note will get a line or two in this section as well. If you have any pictures of you and your catch, we'll publish those as well!

SEPTEMBER 2010

The water has reached 17 deg C most of this month according to the boats equipped with temperature gauges. Warm enough for the Black Bream, but not so for the Trigger Fish it seems. The latter have been notable by their absence this year. Yes there have been one or two caught, but nothing anywhere near the usual numbers. That is a bit of a shame as they do provide some great sport on light gear. Boat anglers have enjoyed some good steady fishing when they have got out. The lower reaches of the Channel (West of Minehead), have had Pollack, Tope, Cod, Bass, Blonde Ray, Thornback Ray, Small Eyed Ray, Spotted Ray, Turbot, Smoothound, Spurdog, Bull Huss, LSD, Gurnard, Rockling, a myriad of lesser & mini species, and even a Haddock of 2.5lbs. Reports of Red Mullet have filtered through from Clovelly & North Devon boats. Blue Shark have been taken by those patient enough to target them in the waters around Lundy Island; nothing huge, but still great sport.

Shore anglers are also having a good time. Dover Sole are the reward for the keen night anglers at Minehead Town Beach. The bigger tides coupled with locally dug blow lug seem to be the winning combination. They are not in huge numbers, but the fish that do come seem to be in the 2 to 3lb bracket... yummie! Weston-Super-Mare (Knightstone Island), is a favourite spot to capture a good Conger, occasional Bass, and flatties. We hear that the bigger tides seem to produce more once again. Hinkley Point reef, Shurton reef and the area nearby are the hotspot at the moment for shore caught Conger to 15-20lbs. It seems they are almost suicidal at the moment and love to take almost any bait presented. A small number of Thornies, and the occasional Bass make this the must-fish place to be it seems. Lure anglers along Bossington and Porlock beaches are taking some school Bass, and occasionally the bigger one which provides a very nice supper.

We really do love to hear how you get on, so drop us your catch reports after your trip and we'll put them in the Individual Catch Reports section. Anything worthy of note will get a line or two in this section as well. If you have any pictures of you and your catch, we'll publish those as well!

AUGUST 2010

A peculiar month for the weather, and a peculiar month for the fishing! Anglers from the shore had bits and pieces of everything expected for this time of year. The anglers up-channel (WSM to Aust etc), had Silver Eeels & flatties galore! We have heard of Dabs, Flounder and Sole to all the usual marks with the occasional good-un. School Bass and Silver Eels have provided high water fun along WSM beach & Sand Bay marks. Burnham-on-Sea has produced some very nice Thornback Ray, Conger Eel, and flatties. It seems bait doesn't matter much from the shore, as everything seems to catch anything. The fishy critters must be hungry.

For boat anglers, again, a bit of everything that should be expected, but nothing remarkable has come to notice of BCA. August is usually a bit slow for some reason, but the water is much warmer and it seems the fish need time to adjust. The Porlock & Minehead boats are reporting Pollack, Bull Huss, Ray, Mackerel, Tope, Doggies, bits & pieces to the west. Derek Purvis (Lyn-Marie II, Porlock), continues to find nice Black Bream for his anglers.

September beckons, the fishing begins to peak that month. Go and get them, and lets us know how you get on.

Drop us your catch reports after your trip and we'll put them in the Individual Catch Reports section, and anything worthy of note will get a line or two in this section as well. If you have any pictures of you and your catch, we'll publish those as well!

JULY 2010

My goodness, we appear to be having a bit of a summer for once. The June weather has been just brilliant. Let's hope it continues. The boats at Porlock, Minehead and Watchet reported hardly any wind & weather cancellations - a far cry from early Summer last year. Here we are midway through July, and the weather has been warm enough, but a bit of wind and rain has subdued the angling activity a little. Some boat cancellations, but well worth it as some days got particularly wild - not fun on a boat!

When the boats did get out there has been some pretty average fishing. July and August does see a bit of a slow down in the channel. Anyone got a theory on that? Drop us a line here at BCA and we'll collate the responses for a later bulletin.

While the charter boats have been generally struggling to get consistent catches, Derek Purvis (Lyn Marie II), out of Porlock Weir seems to have all the luck. His parties have been been having regular good hauls of Black Bream (to 3lb), Blonde Rays (to 24lb), Spotted Rays, Bull Huss (to 14lb), Tope, Smoothies and even some quality summer Cod (to 8lb).

Beach Telegraph has heard that a lucky shore angler bagged a 12lb Bass off Blue Anchor Sea Wall, with others getting the odd Conger, Pouting and Doggie. With the holiday season getting under way, this favoured easy fishing venue might produce more notable catches, especially over the bigger tides. The determined Sole anglers seem to be continuing with their successes off Minehead town beach with  several good fish being taken to locally dug common lugworm. The hotspot is the stretch in front of the large holiday complex on Warren Road towards the golf club end. Another pleased angler was fishing from Minehead Harbour wall when a 5.5lb Bass took his mackerel and squid combo bait. Minehead Gasworks beach is up to its usual high standard over the low water on spring tides. All sorts of species are being captured. My advice - small but strong hooks, smallish baits to match... and use a lead-lifting device to help avoid snagging the rough ground when retrieving your cast.... or fish!

TIGHT LINES.......

JUNE 2010

The Doggies still dog (!), the catches, but they are gently giving way to the things we want to target at this time of year. The Smoothound are about in numbers from shore and boat. Bossington beach is a particular favourite for these obliging fighters. Peeler crab is the killer bait, but it seems that little strips of mackerel and squid are doing just as well. Lilstock beach has produced several Smoothies along with good numbers of Thornback Rays & doggies to keep anglers entertained. Mackerel are about in pretty good numbers west of Porlock Weir to the boats. It doesn't take too long to locate them and fill a bucket or two. They are a bit hit and miss with fast and furious flurries, then nothing for 5 or 10 minutes, then away we go again! Nice juicy fresh Mackerel are also what the Tope are after, and Tope there have been. Specimens of over 40lb are being regularly reported from Porlock Bay westwards. Of course most catches are a more typical 12 to 20lb, but still excellent sport. If you do go after these wonderful fish, please be gentle with them. Don't use stainless steel hooks, don't boat them unless you have to (slip the hook at the side of the boat after a moment or two admiring your catch). If you do need to boat, really do not use a gaff, use a tail loop. Above all be really careful, especially if you are in a small boat. Tope are very powerful, and have incredibly sharp teeth - keep fingers away from the mouth!! TIGHT LINES!

MAY 2010

Well this is the month of the Dogfish! Whatever bait you put down (the more expensive the better!), you'll catch Dogfish. I am pretty sure these critters have their annual get together, from all over the world, here in the Bristol Channel. Very occasionally you might get the species you're targetting, but mostly you are going to get yourself a Lesser Spotted Dogfish!

The water temperature is definitely much cooler for this time of year, than has been the norm for the last decade or so. This may explain the slow start to the fishing this spring. While the rays have been obliging as usual, (amongst the LSD's!), nothing else seems to be very hungry. The uncharacteristic weather seems to be affecting the catches, but there are a few success stories. Stolford, and Hinkley Point Reef, near Bridgwater, are producing Thornback Rays, small codling and the occasional Dover Sole. A few nice quality Dabs are also showing up for those short casting on to the sandy bits. Minehead, Bossington and Porlock shore anglers are reporting more of the same story, mainly LSD and small bootlace Congers. There have been some Three Bearded Rockling to small worm & fish baits.

The boat anglers aren't fairing much better. LSD's hampering all efforts to catch an early season Bass, Black Bream, Smoothound etc. And while the water stays this cold, don't even think of catching a Trigger Fish. Hopefully a bit of sun and a long warm spell may create the conditions for some good fishing as the months go on.

APRIL 2010

The fishing is starting to improve now. Rays and Smoothound are showing in numbers.
There are still quite a lot of small Codling and a few Whiting around and thousands of LSD's

FEBRUARY 2010

This is always a bit of a quiet time of the year. The Cod are still around but numbers can fluctuate. The last 10 years or so have seen the likelihood of a good bag going down from a certainty, to a bit of a lottery win! Thank goodness that there are always a few hungry rays to bolster the catch. The whiting fishing hasn't been much to talk about either, sadly. This a good time of year to check out your gear, service it as required, and get ready for the splendid Spring, Summer and brilliant Autumn action that will soon be upon us!!

JANUARY 2010

Cod are the main target species at the moment, and there are a few to be had. Not very many large doubles yet but there seem
to be a few Codling making up the numbers.
Good Whiting over 2lb are showing up at the western end of the Channel.
Ray's and doggies are the most prolific other species at the moment.

Cod seem to be favouring Mackeral baits for some reason especially the larger fish.

Got out with Steve Webber aboard Osprey on the 11th Jan - within 20 minutes
of dropping the pick "Jimbob" corner had his first bite of the day - and what a fish it was -
after a hard fought tussle a Cod of
32 lbs 10 ozs graced the deck -
an absolutely magnificent fish which was returned to fight another day -
we had Cod up to 9 lbs - Conger to 15 lbs along with Doggies, Whiting and a solitary Thornback -
but all were eclipsed on the day by Jimbob's fish - a cracking day afloat.

pennel rig and 1 short distance with a 2 hook paternoster clipped.
baits were lug and rag both tipped with squid. managed 3 hours before high tide

All in all it was a very productive night. bag included dogfish, conger (the biggest being
just under 9lb), pout, whiting and some small undersize codling.
I regularly fish this mark from the beach (not the wall), and it is always productive at night.

From Mark Waldron on 16/10/11

Went to New Passage, Severn Beach last night for my first trip in a long time.

Weather was fantastic, no wind and the water was like a mill pond, lovely fishing
conditions as the tide was not running too fast.  It was an 11.15 at Avonmouth at 9.50.

Fished from the beach to the left of the new wall with Rag and Mackerel for bait.

To start when I arrived the tide was out beyond the mud, it was about 2 and a half
hours before high tide when I cast my first line.  A whole mackerel on a 7/0 Hook,
I know this is a bit extreme but I was after a decent size conger eel and was taking
full advantage of the access to the deeper water before the tide came and swallowed it up!

Half an hour later whilst going about my business setting up my second rod, the familiar
light tap came, then, the light bend I left in the rod sprung up giving slack line.
When I wound in and struck there was the first fish of the night hooked, gave a
good scrap and turned out to be a conger eel that I can only guess to be 12lb as
I didn't have a scale I also didn't get a photo (sorry, sounds like a "fisherman's tale")
But trust me it happened.  Best shore conger I've had.

Returned it alive and went about waiting 2 hours without a thing on either rod.

I fished the other rod with a 2 hook flapper rig using 2 x size 4 hooks for flounder on
the mud.

After high tide the bites were small but frequent then came a small flounder as attached
which was also returned to live another day.

Really nice evening and I can't wait to get out there again when the tides fall in my favour.

Cheers, Mark.

Fished early hours in the morning 29th August. 2 hrs up and 2 down, The Whiting are in,
in numbers still a bit small so all went back, kept the rod tip nodding, a Tub Gurnard was
last fish taken late into the ebb, it too was sent back to become fatter, although none
for the pot, a good relaxing and enjoyable time, hopefully the Cod will follow soon.

From Jim Gulliford on 15/06/11

Had the monthly trip out with Steve Webber who runs Osprey out of Minehead -
decided to start in Porlock bay where Rob Page kicked things off with a cracking
Bull Huss which never got weighed but would estimate it to be around the 12 -
14 lbs mark - then the Smoothies started coming aboard - both Common & Starries -
after a while the tide eased off and the Hounds moved away to be replaced
with a plague of Doggies - had a little move further down the bay and found a
few more Smoothies again for half an hour then the tide went again and we
were faced with the choice of moving offshore after the Tope & Spurs or
staying inshore to try and find some early Bream - decision was made to
stay inshore and this turned out to be the right decision as the boats that
went offshore were getting dogged out by the sounds of it - we did find a
few Bream along with some Pollack, Mackerel and other bits and bobs -
I managed a nice Bream of 2 lbs 10 ozs - so a good day in all

Species caught were - Dogfish, Bull Huss, Cod, both Smoothies, Pouting,
Poor Cod, Bream, Pollack, Mackerel, Turbot, an Octopus and a Lobster.

Gloucester Police held their annual 3 dayer on 1/2/3 June on Steve Webbers Osprey out of Minehead.
With fantastic weather prebooked 6 happy anglers filled their boots with Smooth Hounds a plenty to
double figures, Bull Huss to 14lb. Small eyed Ray to 12lb 8oz .
The first Bristol Channel Plaice for a club member in 35 years and on the second day over 30 Spurdog
to a record rattling 17lb 2oz .
A total of 20 different Specie were boated including in spite of the efforts of several million dogfish.
Many thanks to Steve for some superb skippering.

Boat fishing out of Minehead on Osprey on 19th Nov we went out at 6.30 am and started off in Porlock Bay.
As usual plenty of LSDs right from the start with a sprinkling of pout, poor cod and whiting. Some of the
whiting were quite small but also four or five per rod in the 35-40 cm range. We fished until the flood
was well under way at about midday and them moved up to a mark off Dunster. By this time we had
also had Bull Huss to 12lb, a spur dog a couple of small codling and four or five congers. The congers
were all double figures with the best estimated at 20lb so seemed better than the usual straps.
Dunster was very slow with only a handful of whiting and dogs plus 2 cod about 3lb each.
We got back to port at about 2pm. Tried allsorts of baits but mackerel and squid seemed to take anything.
The bigger whiting ignored the smaller hooks targeted at them and took large chunks of mackerel on big
hooks intended for conger and rays.

caught along with several small whiting coming to clipped down double flapper, fished onto flats
with both peeler and black lug.
Certainly worth a visit for those wanting a few hours over high tide away from the crowds.
Would strongly advise checking out the features at low tide to get the most out of this high water mark.

Fished a club pairs comp using Osprey and AlyKat out of Minehead.

Weather was very poor, a southerly gale so we had to tuck in under the protection of the Exmoor sea cliffs.

Bite detection was difficult due to the strong winds shaking the rods.

Best fish on the day went to an 11lb Bull Huss, there were several Conger, Small Eyed Ray, Blonde Ray, Pout,

Poor Cod, Codling, Trigger, Streaked Gurnard, Tope, Whiting and literally hundreds of Doggies.

On Osprey alone, over 120 Doggies.

Fished at Burnham on sea on the esplanade at a tide of 10.54 metres.
it was very choppy which blew the sea more up the steps. in just 10
minutes after high tide with using Ragworm on a two hook boom rig
came along a immature cod which was my first ever cod.
it was windy but we still carried on. next time I will get the big one!
Tight lines.

Was a very still muggy day, very overcast. Caught 2 silver eels 6 congers.
Biggest conger was 13.6lb. another was 12.3lb, all the rest were between 7 and 10lb.
Both silvers were caught on rag, and all congers took plain squid. could not get a
bite on mackerel or sand eel.

Have taken a small thornback on (rag / sandeel), two small school bass (rag) and
two sand dabs (rag). Weather each time has been fine and sunny, with a light
westerly breeze All fish taken on about the top three hours of the incoming
tide......medium surf running.
Have seen other anglers taking school bass... bottom fishing.
Havent seen anything taken on lures. Spent a lot of hours there....fishing is slow.

June 2010. 07.30 -. mid -Tide Ebbing. A glorious day - flat calm blue sky, gonna be hot..
(Brown water?) With a few hours to kill before heading up channel to Weston. Decided to
drown some frozen squid. Immediately LSD followed by another and another. 3 approx 24"
lengths. Decided to leave the fishing as I didn't have barbless hooks and it was too nice a
day to keep damaging Dogfish lips - 2 broken hooks - it was better to cut through the hook!.
I guess I'll have to wait until I can get beyond Porlock or get some advice how to get something
else.
Should I use Peeler or???
Good fishin'

Fished a club trip on AlyKat  on 29/05.
Day started well with light southerly breeze, but ended up a fresh/strong westerly blow.

Good fishing in Porlock Bay, plenty of Smoothies up to 10lb to crab baits and a few small Tope.
The last of the flood fished well off Embelle Wood with better Tope to 22lb on Mackeral fillets.

Fresh Mackeral were caught around the Foreland with some Pollock chasing the feathers as well.

Doggies were at every location but not in plague numbers as over the past weeks, and a lone
double figure Bull Huss put in an appearance.

All in all a good day despite the windy conditions.

A day on board Steve Webbers 'Osprey' from Minehead produced loads of Codling. Unfortunately they were too small to keep, most about 6 to 12 inches long. However, I did get two keepers at 5lb 2oz and 4lb 4oz. To the dismay of my mates though, both went back to swim again and grow!. Yes, it's all a bit of a lottery at this time of year! Any day fishing is better than a day at work - so I enjoyed myself!!!!!!!!

Very good weather with a cold, breeze from the South. As with the previous 2 weeks we have
fished this venue we had very poor results, with only 4 very small codling being taken.
Baits used were the usual array of Rag, Squid, Peeler, and mackerel. All of the fish fell to
scratching rigs baited with only Rag. Other baits weren't touched.
Nice one Curtis Owst for landing 3 of the fish caught.

Took the advantage of combining some time off with a big tide, and decided to fish Blue Anchor
(high tide about 8.30pm). With enough rag and lug to cover the session,
I set up on the wall at the chalet end. Weather was dry, and nowhere near as cold as it has been.

Bites came quite regular, but it got quieter just on high tide and a bit after. I ended up with
7 codlets (biggest about 14"), a small pout and a small whiting.

It's nice to see these small cod, and I hope they come back over the next few years when
they'll be worth taking home for the pan.
